Squawkin’ Good Showdown: Voting has ended!

The votes are in! Thank you everyone who has voted in selecting the Top 32 artists competing in Squawkin’ Good Showdown. You’ve picked an excellent group of artists to compete this year who will be played on this week’s edition of Squawkin’ Good Radio on WRUV. Including one band who received 3 write-in votes! 14 people voted (including myself), and many different artists received votes, but 32 clearly stood out.

Congratulations to Dr. Dog, Animal Collective, Death Cab For Cutie and Alabama Shakes, who received the most votes and are the #1 seeds in the tournament. The rest of the Top 32 will be announced on tomorrow night’s show.

Tune in on Wednesday from 8-10 pm on 90.1 WRUV FM in Burlington, VT (or listen online at http://wruv.org/) The Top 32 will be competing for a place in the Squawky Sixteen. The eventual winner of Squawkin’ Good Showdown will be guaranteed airplay on my show the next 12 weeks after their victory plus they will get a special feature on this page. Get all the details at the official Squawkin’ Good Showdown page.

Weekend Mixtape #2 (3/13/16)

Apologies for this week’s Weekend Mixtape being so late. I was away for the weekend and just got back tonight. For this week’s batch of songs there’s an awesome new single from Big Deal, a track from The Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon’s new album Painkillers that just came out this Friday, plus great new songs from up and coming bands Constant Supply, Exam Season, Cavalier, Alxndr London, Service Bells and Baby in Vain. Seems many of this week’s songs have a mid-00’s indie rock vibe (think Death Cab For Cutie, The Notwist and Wolf Parade blended together). Listen to the playlist below.

Also, don’t forget to vote for which artists you want to compete in Squawkin’ Good Showdown, which starts this Wednesday! The 32 artists who get the most votes will be played on this week’s show and will compete to advance to the next round. Vote here!

Squawkin’ Good Showdown – There’s still time to vote!

The twist this year is you, not me, get to decide which artists compete this year! Vote in the survey below for which artists you would like to compete. Weekend Mixtape #1 (3/6/16)

Starting this week, I’m trying a new variation on my Weekend SoundCloud picks. Squawkin Good Tunes’ Weekend Mixtape will be a weekly playlist of my favorite new songs I discovered on SoundCloud plus some other great new tracks I heard this week.

Former Burlington band Argonaut & Wasp are back with one of their best singles yet. Marian Hill of “One Time” fame have released a brand new single, plus there’s a bold new track from rising artist Mitzki, hard rockin’ singles from Nothing and Bleached, latest cuts from Yeasayer‘s Amen & Goodbye, Com Truise’s Silicon Tare EP, and The Boxer Rebellion‘s Ocean by Ocean, promising tracks from London acoustic-rockers Narrow Plains and New Zealand band The Leers.

Listen to all tracks below:

Let me know which tracks you liked best and I’ll play them on this Wednesday’s edition of Squawkin’ Good Radio!

Also, don’t forget to choose which artists you would like to compete in Squawkin’ Good Showdown which starts Wednesday, March 16. Vote here!

Announcing…Squawkin’ Good Showdown 2016!

March is here and that means it’s time for my musical March Madness style tournament. Formerly known as Squawkatiel Madness, Squawkin’ Good Showdown will have 32 of your favorite artists heard on my show in the past year going head to head, competing to be your 2016 champion.

Here’s how the tournament works: Each week, starting Wednesday, March 16, the artists who are up for voting in the current round will be played on that week’s edition of Squawkin’ Good Radio from 8-10 pm on WRUV. Two artists will be paired up in each round to compete for your votes. The one that gets more votes moves on to the next round and will be played on that next week’s show. This will continue until my April 20th show where the champion will be crowned, who you, the listeners, have picked as your favorite Squawkin’ Good artist of the 2015-2016 school year!

The winner of Squawkin’ Good Showdown gets the following prizes: They will be guaranteed one of their songs played each week on Squawkin’ Good Radio for the next 12 weeks after their victory, plus they will get a special feature about them on this website.

For the next 2 weeks I’m giving you, the listeners, the chance to pick which 32 artists will compete in Squawkin’ Good Showdown 2016! Vote in the window below. If it doesn’t show up, you can vote here. You have until 5 pm on Tuesday, March 15 to get your vote in.

Rubblebucket – Top 10 Songs

A new feature I’ll be doing here at Squawkin’ Good Tunes is a showcase on a band I like and a countdown of their best songs. The first band to receive this honor is none other than Burlington exports Rubblebucket, in honor of their upcoming show this Friday, March 4, at Higher Ground Ballroom.

Formerly known as Rubblebucket Orchestra, this group fronted by lead singer Kalmia Traver and bandleader Alex Toth combine a brass band sound with Afrobeat and Latin jazz influences and have increasingly added rock and pop elements to their music with each album. Though they now call Brooklyn home, Rubblebucket are still a favorite here in Burlington and they were the winner of last year’s Squawkatiel Madness tournament on WRUV.

Here are my Top 10 favorite Rubblebucket songs.

10. “Shake Me Around” (Survival Sounds, 2014)

9. “Bikes” (Rubblebucket, 2009)

8. “Silly Fathers” (Omega La La, 2011)

7. “Landing” (Rubblebucket, 2009)

6. “Philips Van” (Rubblebucket, 2009)

5. “On the Ground” (Survival Sounds, 2014)

4. “Came Out of a Lady” (Triangular Daisies EP / Omega La La, 2010)

3. “November” (Rubblebucket, 2009)

2. “Pain From Love” (Oversaturated EP, 2012)

1. “Raining” (Omega La La, 2011)
